Flight Details
The pilot departed Naples, Florida, with a fuel stop in Alma, Georgia, before continuing to the Burnsville area. Upon arrival, he obtained surface wind information for Asheville, North Carolina, which were reported as 340 degrees at 6 knots. He contacted ground personnel at Mountain Air Airport via UNICOM and followed another aircraft inbound for landing. Despite having landed at the airport previously, he performed a low pass over the runway to inspect the landing area. After the low pass, he entered a right closed traffic pattern.
Landing Sequence
The pilot completed the before-landing checklist, lowered the landing gear, extended the flaps, and activated the speed brakes. On final approach, he extended the flaps to the full down position. As the airplane crossed the landing threshold, he reduced throttle. The airplane began to float, touched down, and then bounced and porpoised three times. The pilot stated that the airplane must have encountered a tailwind during this sequence.
Runway Excursion
After the airplane was on the ground during the landing roll, the pilot applied brakes. As the airplane neared the end of the runway, he locked the brakes, causing the airplane to skid. It went off the end of the runway, through the runway overrun area, and down an embankment before coming to a complete stop. The pilot and three passengers exited the airplane. The pilot reported no mechanical problems with the airplane before the accident.
