Incident Overview
A pilot with 666 hours of flight experience was in cruise flight when he observed that the fuel pressure was higher than normal. After switching fuel tanks and activating the electric fuel pump, the pilot saw no change in fuel pressure. Approximately three minutes later, the fuel pressure dropped to zero, and the engine ceased producing power.
Pilot Actions
The pilot switched fuel tanks again and replaced the fuse for the electric fuel pump. Despite these actions, the engine's fuel pressure was not restored. The pilot then elected to perform a forced landing in a cotton field.
Post-Incident Examination
Following the incident, the airplane's fuel system was inspected. When the electric fuel pump was switched on, it appeared to operate, but no fuel was pumped through the lines. The fuel lines and tanks had been emptied during the airplane's recovery and transport to a nearby facility, preventing a thorough examination of the fuel system under operational conditions.
