Event Description
The airplane experienced a ballooning event during the landing flare, leading to a hard landing that resulted in structural damage to the firewall. According to the pilot, the airplane and engine had no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions.
Approach and Weather Information
While on approach, the pilot reviewed the automated surface observation system (ASOS) data three times, with 2 minutes separating each reading. The wind intensity for all three readings was between 8 and 9 knots. The wind directions were from 210 degrees, then 200 degrees, and finally 190 degrees. Based on this data, the pilot chose to land on runway 18.
Landing Sequence
After crossing the runway threshold and entering ground effect, the pilot reduced power. At that point, the airplane abruptly gained altitude. The pilot reported that the airspeed was low, and the airplane stalled before landing hard on the runway at an angle. The hard landing caused structural damage to the firewall.
Aircraft Damage
The firewall sustained structural damage as a result of the hard landing. No other damage was specified in the report.
