Accident Details
The airplane suffered a partial loss of engine power during takeoff. The pilot performed a forced landing in a field. This event followed a similar accident involving the same airplane two years prior. After being rebuilt, the pilot, who was also the aviation maintenance technician responsible for the rebuild, was relocating the airplane to a nearby airport when the incident occurred.
Examination Findings
A post-accident examination and testing of the fuel selector revealed that the detent ring was bent, resulting in internal bypass of air between the ports. Due to the bent detent ring, it was difficult to ascertain positive engagement of the fuel selector's position. Additionally, the fuel selector shaft was found to be worn.
Service Information
The type certificate holder for the airplane had released two Service Bulletins recommending replacement of aging valves. The Federal Aviation Administration also issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) advising aircraft owners to test the valves for internal leakage and condition, and to replace them if necessary.
