Accident Details
The pilot, holding an airline transport pilot certificate with 4,319 total flight hours, was completing the third leg of a flight and landing at an intermediate stop to refuel the 1941-vintage biplane. The aircraft, a fabric-covered biplane, was being operated on a dry asphalt runway measuring 5,659 feet in length and 75 feet in width. Runway 04 was in use, with winds reported from 050 degrees at 5 knots.
Landing Sequence
The pilot reported that he executed a normal approach for landing. During the landing flare for a three-point landing, the nose of the airplane began to veer to the right, and the aircraft started to roll to the left. The pilot attempted to correct for the drift, but the airplane subsequently exited the right side of the runway and ground looped.
Damage and Injuries
During the ground loop, the left wing, covered in fabric, impacted the ground, resulting in structural damage to the left wing strut. The pilot, who was the only occupant reported, was uninjured. The pilot had accumulated a total of 11 hours in the make and model of the accident aircraft.
