Overweight Airplane Strikes Trees and Power Lines After Departure (N2320Y)

Accident Narrative

A witness reported that the airplane appeared to struggle to become airborne, with its engine running at full power. After departure, the airplane barely cleared a tree at the end of the runway before entering a stall and impacting another tree. Other witnesses stated that the airplane clipped a tree and subsequently collided with power lines. Shortly after the collision, an explosion was heard.

Weight and Balance

Investigation determined that the airplane's inability to climb was due to its over gross weight condition. A weight and balance calculation revealed that the airplane was 102 pounds above its maximum gross weight.

Post-Accident Examination

Examination of the airframe and engine components revealed no mechanical or flight control problems that would have contributed to the accident. All systems appeared to be functioning normally at the time of impact.
