Incident Overview
Shortly after takeoff from Runway 16, while climbing through 300 feet, the airplane unexpectedly yawed to the right. The pilot determined that the aircraft had collided with a bird. In response, the pilot increased altitude, then executed a right-hand circling maneuver before landing uneventfully back on Runway 16.
Damage Assessment
Examination of the aircraft revealed that the right forward wing spar, located approximately 1 foot inboard from the right wing tip, had sustained substantial damage as a result of the bird strike. The impact was significant enough to cause structural compromise in that area.
