Pilot Actions
The pilot, who held a private certificate and had 849 flight hours, performed a preflight inspection that included checking oil, fuel, and control surfaces. After starting the engine, he verified oil pressure, voltage, fuel pressure, and avionics. He then taxied to Runway 18 and completed an engine run-up, noting that the engine gauges indicated normal readings. Approximately 15 minutes elapsed between engine start and takeoff.
Accident Sequence
After departure, at an altitude of about 300 feet, the engine lost power. The pilot elected to land in a grassy area located between Runway 18 and Runway 15. During the forced landing, the aircraft sustained structural damage. Fuel was observed at the accident site.
Investigation
On January 23, 2007, an engine run was conducted under the supervision of the NTSB investigator-in-charge. The engine had been separated from the airframe for transport to a salvage yard and was placed on an engine test stand. The propeller, which had impact damage from the forced landing, was replaced with a test propeller. The engine was started and operated for approximately 10 minutes at various power settings. The reason for the reported loss of engine power could not be determined.
