Power Line and Terrain Details
Power lines are situated just south of the dam and run along the south side of the river. At a point where the river forms a sharp 180-degree U-shaped turn, the power lines cross the river to its north side. The crossing occurs in the southward leg of the U-shaped bend. The terrain within the interior of the U shape is approximately 150 feet higher than the river level. This elevated terrain would likely obstruct a pilot's view of the south-flowing leg of the river and possibly the power lines when following the river at low altitude.
Wreckage Examination
Examination of the wreckage revealed that the right wing of the airplane had contacted and been severed by the power line. The power line wires in the stretch crossing the river were found frayed and damaged. A thorough examination of the airframe and engine found no mechanical malfunctions or failures.
