Accident Sequence
The pilot reported an engine problem while returning to the departure airport for landing. Two pilot-rated witnesses subsequently observed the airplane in a steep spiral before it impacted trees in a nose down attitude.
Examination Findings
All major components of the airplane were accounted for at the accident site. A postaccident examination of the airframe and engine disclosed no evidence of a mechanical malfunction or component failure. An examination of the engine and airframe fuel system components failed to find any fuel. There were no obvious indications of fuel spillage or staining of vegetation at the accident site, nor did emergency response personnel report the odor of fuel upon their arrival.
The circumstances of the accident, including the reported engine problem and the subsequent spiral descent, were documented. The examination results indicate that no preimpact mechanical issues were present, and the absence of fuel in the system was noted without evidence of leakage.
