Landing Attempts
The pilot flew over the airport and observed the windsock, which appeared limp. He entered right traffic for runway 27 and noted the surrounding mountainous terrain. The pilot performed two rejected landings before attempting a third approach.
On the third attempt, the pilot realized he was still high but believed he could land within the first third of the runway. However, the airplane floated and touched down in the last third of the runway.
Runway Excursion
After touchdown, the airplane veered left off the runway. It crossed a ditch, went down an embankment, and collided with trees. The runway excursion and subsequent collision with trees resulted in substantial damage.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane.
