Accident Narrative
The pilot reported entering a left downwind for runway 32 at the intended destination airport. The runway measured 2,803 feet by 75 feet and was asphalt. After lowering the landing gear and completing the before landing checklist, the pilot noted that all indications showed the landing gear was down. During the landing flare, the pilot heard and felt metal grinding on the runway and immediately initiated a go-around.
During the climb out, the airplane exhibited a right rolling tendency. The pilot was able to maintain control but could not avoid striking trees. After the tree strike, the pilot noticed the flaps were still extended and retracted them. The pilot then returned to the airport for another landing attempt. The pilot reported aligning for a short final with the landing gear showing down and locked, flaps set to approach setting, and power near maximum. The pilot successfully landed the aircraft and taxied to the ramp without further incident, then parked and shut down.
Post-Accident Inspection
During the post-accident inspection, the landing gear was observed in the down and locked position. A visual inspection of the landing gear did not reveal any anomalies. When the airplane was powered up, all three green landing gear position indicator lights were illuminated.
