Incident Overview
A 160-hour private pilot lost control of a single-engine airplane while performing takeoffs and landings on Runway 17. The pilot, who had accumulated 128 hours in the same make and model, planned to stay in the traffic pattern for practice. The asphalt runway, reported to be dry and in good condition, measured 6,110 feet long by 75 feet wide.
Circumstances
During the third landing on Runway 17, the pilot landed approximately 2,500 feet from the landing threshold. After rolling for a short distance, the aircraft abruptly veered to the left and departed the runway on a heading of 120 degrees. The nose landing gear collapsed, and the engine firewall and engine mounts sustained structural damage.
Environmental Conditions
At the time of the mishap, winds were reported from 080 degrees at 13 knots, gusting to 16 knots. The pilot confirmed that aircraft controls and engine performance were normal.
Occupant Outcome
The pilot and a passenger were able to egress the airplane unassisted and reported no injuries.
