What happened
The pilot reported that approximately two to three miles from the runway threshold, the aircraft experienced an unexpected engine failure. Unable to maintain sufficient altitude or airspeed to reach the airport, the pilot executed a forced landing maneuver toward the least congested area adjacent to the nearest road.
During the descent, the airplane impacted the top of an unoccupied van located within a junkyard. The right wing subsequently struck a tree, and the left wing contacted an electric utility pole. Despite these impacts, the aircraft continued forward through a six-foot-tall chain-link fence before finally coming to rest on the adjacent roadway.
The investigation
A thorough examination of both the engine and the airframe was conducted following the accident. Investigators found no evidence of pre-existing mechanical anomalies or defects that would have contributed to the in-flight failure.
