Incident Overview
A private pilot and a flight instructor were conducting a training flight involving touch-and-go landings. After completing one touch-and-go, they proceeded around the traffic pattern for a second landing. Before touchdown, the pilot and instructor verified that the landing gear was extended by visually checking a mirror mounted on the wing and observing the illuminated green landing gear light.
Sequence of Events
Shortly after touchdown, the right landing gear collapsed, causing the right wing to descend. In response, the pilot applied full engine power in an attempt to execute a go-around. However, the airplane would not become airborne and slid to a stop in the grass adjacent to the runway. The pilot, flight instructor, and a passenger exited the aircraft unassisted.
Damage Assessment
The right wing and right aileron sustained structural damage. The left main landing gear remained down and locked and was not affected. An investigation into the incident determined that the reason for the collapse of the right main landing gear could not be determined.
