Flight and Descent
A pilot operating under a VFR flight plan was flying a nearly direct route from departure to destination. Approaching a mountain range near the end of the planned flight, the pilot canceled VFR flight following and began to descend.
Encounter with Weather
Upon entering the mountains, the pilot encountered forecasted clouds and low ceilings that prevented continuation on the planned direct course. The pilot continued descending and maneuvered through the mountainous terrain, generally heading toward the destination.
Course Changes and Final Maneuvers
After making three major course reversals, the pilot began following a road that would have led back to the last major town passed during the direct portion of the flight. While following the road, an apparent course alteration placed the aircraft in a narrow valley with up-sloping terrain.
Collision
As the pilot continued up the valley, the aircraft reached a forested ridge that it did not clear, resulting in a collision with multiple trees.
