Incident Overview
A 250-hour private pilot experienced a loss of control while landing a tailwheel-equipped homebuilt airplane on a 3,300-foot long by 100-foot wide grass airstrip. The pilot reported that the incident occurred during a normal landing on Runway 15.
Pilot Report
According to the pilot, during the flare the airplane bounced, assumed a nose-high attitude, and veered left by about 10 to 15 degrees. The pilot applied full right rudder and full throttle in an attempt to counteract the left-turning tendency, but was unable to regain control. The airplane continued off the left side of the runway and came to rest adjacent to it.
Weather Conditions
The nearest automated weather station, located approximately 14 miles west of the accident site, reported variable winds at 3 knots, visibility 10 miles, and clear skies near the time of the incident. However, the pilot stated that the winds at the airstrip were from 090 degrees at 5 to 7 knots.
Aftermath
The pilot and a passenger were able to exit the airplane without assistance. No injuries were reported.
