Accident Overview
The accident involved an airplane that impacted terrain after a descent in a right turn while flying through instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The airplane was occupied by two individuals, both of whom were private pilots without instrument ratings.
Pilot Information
The left-seated pilot was at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition strongly associated with obesity and high blood pressure requiring multiple medications. According to the investigation, OSA, if present and untreated, can cause significant impairment and increase accident risk. However, the actual presence or possible role of OSA in this accident could not be conclusively determined. The source noted that such a disorder could have adversely affected the left seat pilot’s decision-making regarding initiating or continuing flight into deteriorating visibility and/or his responses to such conditions once encountered. Additionally, the left seat pilot did not have a current medical certificate at the time of the accident.
Wreckage Examination
An examination of the wreckage revealed no pre-impact anomalies that would have precluded normal airplane operations. The aircraft appeared to have been in a condition capable of normal flight prior to impact.
Medical Considerations
