Introduction
An airplane experienced a partial loss of engine power while in the traffic pattern, leading to a forced landing in a cornfield. The airplane nosed over during the landing.
Sequence of Events
The pilot reported that he reduced engine power on the downwind leg to begin a descent. On the base leg, the airplane descended below the glide path. Despite multiple throttle inputs, the engine remained at 1,500 rpm and did not respond to changes in throttle position. With the airplane too low to reach the airport, the pilot executed a forced landing in a cornfield. During the landing, the airplane nosed over.
Post-Accident Examination
After the accident, twelve gallons of fuel were drained from the airplane. The fuel selector was found in the left tank position, the mixture control was in the mid-travel range, and the carburetor heat was off. The throttle, mixture, and carburetor heat controls were checked and functioned properly. A comprehensive post-accident inspection revealed no anomalies consistent with a loss of engine power.
Weather and Carburetor Icing Conditions
At the accident site, the temperature was 20°C and the dew point was 17°C. Data from these conditions indicated the possibility of moderate carburetor icing at cruise power and serious icing at descent power.
