Narrative
During a night currency flight, the pilot of a Cessna 120 was turning onto the final leg of the approach when he perceived the airplane's altitude to be higher than normal. To correct this, he executed a sideslip maneuver. While flaring for landing, the pilot lost visual contact with the runway surface. The airplane subsequently touched down left of the runway centerline, near the edge of the runway. It then impacted a runway sign, causing the aircraft to flip over and come to rest in an inverted position.
Post-Accident Findings
The pilot reported that no mechanical malfunctions or failures occurred with the airplane prior to the impact. The flight was conducted for the purpose of regaining night currency.
