Accident Overview
A private certificated pilot was conducting a personal flight under Title 14, CFR Part 91, in a tailwheel-equipped airplane fitted with tundra tires. The landing was performed on an asphalt surfaced runway. During the landing roll, the pilot reported that he applied the brakes, and the airplane subsequently nosed over.
Pilot Report
In the Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident Report (NTSB Form 6120.1) submitted by the pilot, he indicated that there was no mechanical malfunction with the airplane. The airplane had been operating normally throughout the flight, and the pilot noted no anomalies prior to the landing.
Damage Assessment
The accident resulted in structural damage to the wings and the vertical stabilizer. The extent of damage was confined to these components; no other damage was mentioned in the report.
Pilot's Safety Recommendation
In the optional safety recommendation portion of the accident report, which asks how the accident could have been prevented, the pilot stated, in part: "maybe longer roll." This suggests the pilot believed that a longer landing roll might have altered the outcome.
