Incident Overview
A pilot experienced a porpoising event during the landing flare while attempting to land in visual meteorological conditions. In response, the pilot initiated a go-around. However, the aircraft did not clear a group of trees located approximately one-quarter mile from the departure end of the runway. The aircraft struck the trees, resulting in damage to the airframe. The pilot was able to maintain control of the airplane after the impact and subsequently performed a second approach, which resulted in a full-stop landing.
Discovery After Landing
Following the safe landing, the pilot realized that the initial approach had been conducted with a tailwind of about 20 knots. The impact with the trees caused numerous dents on the leading edge of the wings and a tear in the skin of the horizontal stabilizer.
Aircraft Condition
The damage was limited to the external surfaces: dents on both wing leading edges and a torn skin on the horizontal stabilizer. No other damage was reported.
