Incident Overview
According to a written report by the pilot, he was conducting a straight-in approach to the runway. During the descent, he reduced engine power and deployed the speed brakes. The pilot also made several radio calls during the approach.
Pre-Landing Actions
Approximately 5 miles from the runway, the pilot executed the pre-landing checklist, which includes lowering the landing gear. However, he deliberately left the gear retracted to maintain a higher airspeed on the approach.
Distraction and Gear Position
At about 3 miles from the runway, the pilot initiated a radio conversation with another pilot who was departing the airport. He stated that he became distracted by this conversation and subsequently forgot to lower the landing gear. The aircraft touched down in the center of the runway with the gear still retracted.
Damage and Mechanical Condition
The landing with the gear retracted resulted in structural damage to the fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures of the aircraft.
