Incident Overview
The pilot of a tail-wheel airplane reported that his pilot-certificated passenger was performing the landing. During the landing roll, the passenger lost directional control of the airplane. As the airplane began to depart the runway, the pilot assumed control of the flight controls in an attempt to direct the airplane to the adjacent runway.
Impact and Damage
The airplane subsequently impacted a gopher hole and nosed over. The collision caused wrinkling of the engine firewall and vertical stabilizer. Additionally, three lift struts and both wing spars were bent. The extent of damage indicates a significant impact.
Pilot Statement
According to the pilot, the loss of directional control occurred during the landing roll. The pilot's decision to take over the controls was made to guide the airplane away from the runway. However, the presence of the gopher hole on the adjacent runway led to the nose-over event.
