Incident
On 14 September 2008, Aeroflot Flight 821, a scheduled domestic passenger flight operated by Aeroflot-Nord under a service agreement with Aeroflot, crashed while approaching Perm International Airport. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-505, impacted the ground at 5:10 local time (UTC+06).
Casualties and Damage
All six crew members and 82 passengers on board were killed. Among the fatalities was Russian Colonel General Gennady Troshev, an adviser to the President of Russia and former commander of the North Caucasus Military District during the Second Chechen War. The crash also damaged a section of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Context
Flight 821 is the deadliest accident involving a Boeing 737-500, surpassing the 1993 crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 733. It was the second-deadliest aviation accident of 2008, after Spanair Flight 5022.
