Incident
On 5 May 2019, Aeroflot Flight 1492, a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Moscow–Sheremetyevo to Murmansk, Russia, experienced a lightning strike while climbing out. The aircraft, a Sukhoi Superjet 100, subsequently suffered an electrical failure and returned to Sheremetyevo for an emergency landing.
Sequence of Events
During the landing attempt, the aircraft bounced and touched down hard. The hard impact caused the landing gear to collapse. Fuel spilled from the wings, and a fire erupted. The fire rapidly engulfed the rear of the aircraft.
Aftermath
Of the 78 occupants aboard, 41 lost their lives. The accident remains under investigation. The aircraft was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire.
