Incident Details
During a landing approach to runway 35, the pilot experienced a sudden loss of airspeed and a rapid increase in the descent rate that did not respond to the application of power. The airplane subsequently landed hard on the runway, resulting in the collapse of all three landing gear. The airplane then slid off the left side of the runway.
Aircraft Damage
The wing spar and engine firewall sustained substantial damage due to the hard landing and subsequent ground slide.
Pilot Statement
The pilot reported that he was flying from the right seat, which made it more difficult to reference the flight instruments. He also stated that he encountered windshear during the approach.
Weather Conditions
At the time of the accident, the winds recorded at an airport located 10 miles northeast of the accident airport were 280 degrees at 17 knots, with gusts to 34 knots.
