Accident Overview
A Cessna 182S experienced a runway overrun and subsequent nose-over after landing long on Runway 32. The pilot reported that he failed to abort the landing early in the sequence, leading to the aircraft touching down beyond the intended point.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, the airplane landed long, departed the runway, and nosed over. Photographic evidence documented 330 feet of skid marks on the asphalt pavement, beginning before the departure end of the runway. The skid marks continued approximately 75 feet beyond the pavement, through grass, and down a shallow ravine to the overturned aircraft.
Aircraft Damage
Examination of the airplane revealed substantial damage to the engine compartment, both wings, and the vertical stabilizer. The pilot reported that there were no pre-impact malfunctions or mechanical failures with the airplane.
Runway and Environmental Conditions
Runway 32 was 1,840 feet long, 30 feet wide, and surfaced with asphalt. Winds recorded at an airport 17 nautical miles to the east, around the time of the accident, were from 200 degrees at 6 knots.
