Accident Details
A flight instructor was demonstrating a landing procedure using the manual Full-Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) mode. The event occurred during short final approach, approximately 3 to 5 feet above ground level.
Sequence of Events
While at this height, the helicopter quickly descended to the right and forward. The flight instructor suspected wind shear and applied corrective controls. However, the downward motion could not be reversed before the helicopter made contact with the ground. The left rear skid struck first, followed by the right rear skid, before the instructor was able to bring the helicopter back to a hover.
Damage
A post-flight examination revealed damage to the vertical stabilizer and tail boom of the helicopter.
