What happened
On November 9, 2009, at approximately 0517 UTC, a Beech 1900D, registration 5Y-VVQ, was performing a visual approach for landing at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, Kenya. The aircraft, operated by Blue Bird Aviation, was conducting a chartered cargo flight originally destined for Guryell, Somalia.
Prior to the accident, the pilot had reportedly shut down the number one engine due to a loss of oil pressure, prompting the aircraft to turn back toward Nairobi. While approximately 300 meters from the runway, the airplane rolled to the left and struck the ground in a steep bank. The impact resulted in a post-crash fire and the destruction of the aircraft. The accident resulted in 1 fatality and 1 serious injury among the two pilots on board.
At the time of the accident, the aircraft was operating under an instrument flight plan, though visual meteorological conditions were prevailing.
