What happened
On January 16, 2010, an Iran Air Airbus A300-600R, registration EP-IBB, was performing a scheduled takeoff from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport (ARN) bound for Mehrabad International Airport (THR) in Tehran. During the initial stages of the takeoff roll, the aircraft's number 1 (left) engine, a General Electric CF6-80C2A5F, experienced a failure characterized by flames emitting from the aft end of the engine.
In response to the failure, the takeoff was aborted. During the aborted takeoff, the aircraft veered left off the runway and came to a stop in a snow-covered grass area. There were no injuries reported among the 23 crew members and 149 passengers on board.
The investigation
The investigation was conducted under the jurisdiction of the Swedish government. Physical inspection of the aircraft revealed damage to the landing lights, the nose wheel landing gear, and the left main landing gear, as well as damage to the number 1 engine. Additionally, small engine components were recovered from the runway surface.
