Accident Details
A commercial pilot, operating a single-engine airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 91 on a local flight, reported experiencing carburetor ice after departing the airport to warm up the engine. The pilot elected to make a precautionary landing on a sandbar to check the airplane's engine.
Landing and Nose-Over
According to the pilot, the sandbar was rougher than anticipated, and during the landing roll, excessive braking was applied, causing the airplane to nose over. The pilot submitted a written statement to the National Transportation Safety Board indicating that "better pilot evaluation of the landing zone, less braking, or more weight in the back of the aircraft could have prevented the accident."
Aircraft Damage
The pilot reported that the airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings, the rudder, vertical stabilizer, and the right lift strut. No mechanical problems were known prior to the accident.
