Incident Overview
During a solo cross-country flight, a student pilot attempted to land with a right quartering tailwind. After two unsuccessful landing attempts, the pilot went around the pattern for a third approach. During the landing flare, the airplane's nose wheel impacted the runway first, causing the aircraft to bounce. Shortly thereafter, the nose gear collapsed, and the airplane came to rest upright in a nose-low position.
Aircraft Examination
No mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airplane's flight controls were reported following the incident. An examination of the aircraft revealed that the firewall sustained structural damage as a result of the accident sequence.
