Background
The airplane's fuel tanks were filled on the day before the accident. Following refueling, the aircraft flew for 1.3 hours before the accident flight without additional fuel.
The Accident
During the accident flight, the airplane suffered a complete loss of engine power. The pilot attempted a forced landing into a field. While landing, the nose landing gear struck a power line, and the airplane subsequently came to rest inverted.
Investigation Findings
Examination by Federal Aviation Administration inspectors revealed no preimpact mechanical anomalies in the aircraft, including the fuel feed system. Only residual and unusable fuel remained in the tanks. The total Hobbs meter time from the last fuel service to the accident was 6.0 hours. According to the airplane owner's manual, fuel endurance at cruise power setting is 5.9 hours, which does not include engine start, taxi, takeoff, and climb phases.
