Accident Overview
A pilot experienced an accident while attempting to land on a private airstrip in high, gusty wind conditions. According to the pilot, the approach and touchdown were conducted under challenging wind conditions.
Sequence of Events
The pilot aligned the aircraft with the centerline of runway 27 and maintained a crab into the wind until the landing flare and touchdown. Upon touchdown, the airplane encountered a wind gust, causing the right wing to impact the ground. The airplane subsequently nosed over and came to rest upside down on the grass runway.
Wind Conditions
A local weather station reported that the prevailing wind was from the south-southwest at 27 knots, gusting to 38 knots. These conditions were present at the time of the accident.
Aircraft Damage
The right wing, engine firewall, and rudder sustained substantial damage as a result of the impact and subsequent nose-over.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation of the airplane.
