Incident Overview
During a proficiency check ride, the pilot was practicing landings. While performing a wheel landing, the pilot noticed another airplane holding short of the runway. In an effort to expedite clearing the runway, the pilot attempted to reach the A-4 taxiway before the aircraft had slowed to a safe speed for an exit. The pilot applied the brakes hard, causing the aircraft to skid off the runway surface. The tail of the aircraft subsequently struck a taxiway sign.
Damage Assessment
The impact with the taxiway sign resulted in substantial damage to the rear fuselage and empennage. No other damage or injuries were reported.
Pilot Actions
The pilot had been focused on clearing the runway quickly due to the presence of another aircraft holding short. The decision to apply the brakes aggressively was made to expedite the exit, but the maneuver resulted in a loss of directional control and a departure from the paved surface.
