Event Sequence
The passenger of a tailwheel-equipped airplane, who is a student pilot, reported that the aircraft was "coming in a little hot" during the landing approach. According to the passenger's account, the airplane touched down on its main landing gear, then bounced. It touched down again on the left main wheel, after which it "bounced to the right." Following the bounce to the right, the pilot applied additional power. The airplane then "gradually" veered off the runway and into adjacent weeds, where it encountered vegetation and a ditch.
Aftermath
Photographs provided by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector who responded to the scene show that the airplane came to rest in an inverted position. The passenger sustained serious injuries in the accident. The pilot, at the time of the investigation report, was in critical condition and unable to communicate with investigators.
Investigation
As of the report, no further details regarding the cause of the accident were available due to the pilot's condition. The FAA is continuing its investigation into the incident.
