Accident Summary

A pilot experienced a landing gear failure during the landing roll, resulting in substantial damage to the airplane. The pilot reported that the approach and initial touchdown were normal, but during the roll, the airplane began tracking to the right. Despite applying left rudder, a loud bang was heard, and the airplane moved abruptly and uncontrollably. The left wing and horizontal stabilizer then contacted the runway surface, sustaining substantial damage.

Pilot Report

The pilot stated that he had conducted a normal stabilized descent on approach and executed a flare at approximately 50 feet above the runway. A three-point touchdown was made. During the subsequent landing roll, the airplane deviated to the right, prompting the pilot to apply left rudder. Shortly thereafter, a loud bang was heard, and the airplane's movement became abrupt and uncontrolled. The left wing and horizontal stabilizer subsequently struck the runway, resulting in damage.

Examination Findings

Post-accident examination of the airplane revealed that the left wheel and axle had separated from the main landing gear assembly. Inspection of the attachment hardware showed that two of the four bolts securing the axle to the gear had failed. The fracture surfaces of these two bolts exhibited characteristics consistent with fatigue failure. The other two bolts remained intact. The separation of the axle allowed the left main landing gear to collapse, leading to the loss of directional control and the subsequent wing and stabilizer contact with the runway.
