Radome collapse on Fokker F100 departure from Warsaw

No fatalities • Warsaw, Poland

A Contact Air Fokker F100 experienced a radome collapse and erroneous airspeed indications during a flight from Warsaw to Zurich.

What happened

On July 1, 2010, a Fokker F100, registration D-AGPH, was performing an IFR flight from Warszawa-Okecie airport in Warsaw, Poland, to Zürich, Switzerland. During the climb phase between 7,000 and 8,000 feet MSL, the crew heard an impact sound on the lower, forward section of the fuselage. This was accompanied by incorrect airspeed indications appearing on the captain's instruments.

The crew notified Air Traffic Control (ATC) and elected to return to the airport due to a suspected birdstrike that caused the radome to collapse. During the initial final approach, the crew received a "WINDSHEAR" alert and subsequently executed a go-around. A second approach was completed without further incident. There were no injuries to the 84 passengers or the 4 crew members on board.
