What happened

On August 30, 2010, a Boeing 757 operated by Shanghai Airlines was climbing from PuDong International Airport in Shanghai, China, when the aircraft was struck by lightning. Following the strike, the flight crew initiated a return to PuDong International Airport, where the aircraft landed without further incident.

The investigation

The investigation, conducted by the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China, identified several points of impact and damage. Inspectors found four small holes in the section 43 crown skin and one hole in a dorsal radio antenna. Additionally, investigators located burn evidence on an air distribution duct and on insulation blankets inside the aircraft.
