Narrative
A pilot conducting a takeoff from a seaplane base encountered a heavy rain shower while taxiing. The winds were from the south at 4 to 6 knots. Although air traffic control cleared the pilot for a westbound departure, the pilot chose to perform a crosswind takeoff. During the takeoff roll, the pilot applied left wing down aileron inputs and engine power. As the airplane accelerated, it began to drift to the left. The pilot reported being unable to stop the drift with full right rudder and noted that he may have inadvertently relaxed the aileron input. He decided to abort the takeoff. As he reduced engine power, the right wing struck the water, resulting in substantial damage to the wing spar and aileron.

The pilot stated that he performed a preflight inspection before taxiing. He described the weather during taxi as heavy rain with southerly winds. He was cleared for a westbound departure but opted for a crosswind takeoff. During acceleration, the airplane drifted left despite his control inputs. After aborting, the right wing made contact with the water. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions or failures throughout the event.
Damage
The right wing sustained substantial damage, specifically to the wing spar and aileron. No other damage was reported.
