Incident Overview
On December 6, 2010, at 11:15 local time, a TAAG Angola Airlines (TAAG) Boeing 777-2M2ER, powered by two General Electric GE90-94B turbofan engines, experienced a failure of the No. 2 (right) engine low pressure turbine shortly after departure from Lisbon International Airport (LPPT), Portugal. The aircraft was operating a scheduled passenger flight to Luanda International Airport (FNLU), Angola.
Engine Failure and Response
During the initial climb, the low pressure turbine in the right engine failed. Turbine blades were expelled from the rear of the engine and fell over a populated area below. The flight crew initiated an air turn back and returned to Lisbon. The aircraft completed a successful landing with no reported injuries to passengers or crew.
