Accident Details
A certificated flight instructor (CFI) and a student pilot were practicing a straight-in autorotation with a planned power recovery from an altitude of 1,000 feet. According to the CFI, the helicopter's rotor rpm was maintained throughout the maneuver. During the recovery stage, the student pilot initiated the flare but did not apply throttle. The CFI reported that he did not react in time to add power for recovery. He subsequently took the controls, but the helicopter landed hard.
Damage
The main rotor contacted the tail boom, causing substantial damage to the tail boom, tail rotor drive shaft, and tail rotor control rod.
Additional Information
The CFI stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the helicopter.
