Incident Details
A helicopter experienced a total loss of engine power at an altitude of approximately 200 feet after takeoff. The pilot performed a 180-degree autorotation to a parking lot. The helicopter landed hard, resulting in substantial damage to the left skid and tail boom.
Pilot's Account
The pilot reported that before takeoff, the fuel gauge indicated between one-eighth and one-quarter full. During climb, the low fuel pressure light illuminated, followed by a complete loss of engine power. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the helicopter. He attributed the power loss to fuel exhaustion, explaining that he "ran it out of fuel" by "trusting the gauge."
Postaccident Inspection
During a postaccident examination, a Federal Aviation Administration inspector drained approximately 3 ounces of fuel from the gascolator.
