Introduction
On 7 May 2011, a scheduled passenger flight operated by Merpati Nusantara Airlines crashed into the sea off the coast of West Papua, Indonesia. The aircraft, a Xian MA60, was carrying 25 people, all of whom died in the accident.

The flight, designated MZ8968/MNA8968, was a domestic service from Sorong to Kaimana, both located in the Indonesian province of West Papua. The aircraft was a Xian MA60 operating for Merpati Nusantara Airlines.
Accident
While on approach to Kaimana Airport, the aircraft encountered heavy rain conditions. It crashed into the sea approximately 800 meters (2,600 feet) before the runway. All 25 occupants, including passengers and crew, were killed. The accident remains the only fatal incident involving a Xian MA60.
