Accident Overview
Following a cross-country flight, the pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane lost directional control during the landing roll. The airplane exited the side of the runway and entered a ground loop before coming to rest in an upright position.
Events
The loss of control occurred after touchdown while the airplane was still rolling along the runway. The pilot was unable to maintain the intended path, causing the airplane to veer off the paved surface. The subsequent ground loop resulted in significant forces on the landing gear and airframe.
Aircraft Damage
During the ground loop, the right wheel assembly separated from the airplane. Additionally, the right wing struck the ground, resulting in substantial damage to that wing structure. The airplane remained upright after the event.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. No other issues were noted.
