Incident Overview
A helicopter engaged in aerial filming struck a static power line and subsequently performed an autorotation to the ground. The aircraft was carrying a film director and a cameraman, who were filming the contents of a moving truck's bed from the air. The pilot was flying behind the truck when the incident occurred.
Flight Details
While maneuvering behind the truck, the pilot was unaware that the terrain was rising. At the last second, the pilot observed a static power line crossing the helicopter's path. In an attempt to avoid the obstacle, the pilot flew underneath it. However, the main rotor mast impacted the wire.
Damage and Outcome
Following the impact, the pilot successfully performed an autorotation, landing the helicopter without further incident. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the tail boom, tail rotor, vertical stabilizer, and main rotor control linkages. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.
