Amphibian Float-Equipped Airplane Noses Over During Water Landing Attempt

Accident Narrative

A pilot flying an amphibian float-equipped airplane intended to practice water landings. After taking off from a paved runway, he neglected to retract the landing gear. During the approach to a large nearby pond for his first water landing, he did not notice that the wheels were still extended. When he attempted the water landing, the airplane nosed over.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to its wings during the accident sequence.

Pilot Statement

The pilot reported that he was not injured when exiting the airplane. He stated that there were no failures or malfunctions associated with the airplane prior to the accident. He added that he needs to be more dedicated to using checklists in the future.
