On August 14, 2011, at 1126 mountain daylight time, a Boeing A75N1(PT17) aircraft, registration N53473, sustained substantial damage when it collided with terrain shortly after takeoff from Fabens Airport (E35) in Fabens, Texas. The private pilot and a pilot-rated passenger aboard sustained serious injuries. The aircraft was registered to a private individual and operated by the pilot. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the personal cross-country flight, which was originating at the time of the accident and destined for Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Pilot Statements

The pilot reported that the airplane had recently undergone maintenance to repair the magnetos. The day before the flight, he performed an engine test run and cycled each magneto, finding no issues. On the accident day, another engine run revealed no anomalies. After departure, the pilot noted that the engine did not produce sufficient power—approximately 100 to 200 RPM less than expected—though he could not recall the exact RPM setting. He continued the takeoff but during the climb was unable to maintain a safe airspeed. When the airplane was less than 100 feet above ground, he decided to turn back to the airport. He recalled the airspeed was between 40 and 50 (units unspecified). During the turn, the airspeed decreased to 40, the left wing stalled, and the airplane nosed over toward the ground. The pilot attempted to level the wings before impact and did not remember the impact itself.

The pilot-rated passenger stated that the aircraft did not accelerate well on the takeoff roll and the climb rate was marginal. At approximately 100 feet above ground, the pilot entered a left turn, and the airspeed indicator read 52 to 55 (units unspecified). During the turn, the airplane suddenly stalled, the left wing dropped, and it descended at a steep angle. The pilot managed to level the wings just before impact.

Weather Information

Weather reported at El Paso International Airport (ELP), located about 21 miles northwest of the accident site, at 1151 indicated wind from 280 degrees at 9 knots, visibility 10 miles, few clouds at 5,500 feet, scattered clouds at 25,000 feet, temperature 31°C, dewpoint 15°C, and an altimeter setting of 30.03 inches of mercury. Calculation of relevant meteorological data showed the density altitude was 6,425 feet. A review of the carburetor icing probability chart from FAA Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin CE-09-35 (dated June 30, 2009) indicated that the airplane was operating in conditions favorable for carburetor icing at glide and cruise power.

Examination

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspectors examined the airplane at the scene. The aircraft sustained damage to the firewall, fuselage, and wing struts. The inspectors were unable to determine the reason for the loss of engine power.
