Accident Details
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane was attempting to land at an off-airport site, which was surrounded by higher terrain on all sides. Prior to beginning the approach, the pilot assessed the wind conditions and planned an approach into a reported 10-knot headwind.
During the final approach, the pilot performed a side-slip maneuver to steepen the approach path. A sudden wind shift caused the airplane to descend at a rate greater than anticipated. The pilot was unable to arrest the descent, and the main landing gear wheels struck a mound approximately 150 feet short of the intended touchdown point.
Sequence of Events
After the initial contact with the mound, the airplane bounced. The pilot added engine power in an attempt to cushion the landing. Upon the second touchdown, the main landing gear collapsed.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings and fuselage as a result of the accident. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical anomalies with the airplane.
